2024/2025: 

New Iowa Cold Case Unit

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird has announced the creation of a new cold case unit aimed at solving more than 400 unsolved cases across the state. The unit will consist of three investigators and one prosecutor.

Their goal is to bring fresh perspectives to long-standing cases and provide closure to families still seeking justice. The team will collaborate with sheriff’s offices and police departments throughout Iowa to revisit these cases.

Leading the unit is retired state trooper and former Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent Steve Ponsetto, who emphasized the team’s primary objectives: seeking justice for victims, providing answers for families, and holding perpetrators accountable.
